Tate House Museum

About organization

Tate House was built in 1755 for George and Mary Tate who came to the British colonies from the London area following George’s assignment as Senior Mast Agent for the Royal Navy. It is the only colonial-era building open to the public in Cumberland County which includes Greater Portland. It is a National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Organization programming strengths

The public is offered an experience of colonial Portland through docent-led tours of the Tate House which is interpreted as the home of a merchant class family and includes representations of enslaved and Indigenous people. We interpret the mast trade in the context of colonial economies, keep a raised bed herb garden, and also offer special architectural and Stroudwater neighborhood tours.
