Maine Historical Society

About Us

Founded in 1822, Maine Historical Society is the third oldest state-dedicated historical society in the county. MHS preserves and shares Maine’s story. We are a modern, forward-looking organization with an expansive vision for the role that history and MHS can play in Maine. Our Portland campus includes our Museum Galleries, the Brown Research Library, and the Wadsworth-Longfellow House & Longfellow Garden, all open to guests and MHS members alike. Our online database Maine Memory Network includes historical items contributed by MHS and nearly 300 partners across Maine and New England, alongside hundreds of digital exhibits and educational resources. MHS initiatives include programming, extensive digital resources, and educational resources that support remote learning.

Organization programming strengths

We provide access to the most comprehensive collection of archival material related to Maine history and our changing exhibitions and in-person and online public programs use Maine history to provide context for issues of contemporary interest and concern. Our collection is especially strong in the topics and collections of: the Wadsworth-Longfellow families; early Maine photography; historic clothing; the Kennebec Proprietors, Pejebscot Proprietors, and Barclay Collections (1625-1893); Wabanaki art and history; architectural drawings.
