Victoria Mansion
About organization
Victoria Mansion is a much-loved Portland landmark, but its significance extends far beyond Maine. Built as a summer home between 1858 and 1860 for Ruggles and Olive Morse, the Mansion offers an incredibly intact example of mid-19th century life among the upper class. But there is more to the story than just the wealthy owners; the stories of domestic staff, both immigrants in Maine and enslaved in the Morses’ home in New Orleans help round out the picture of this amazing property.
Distinguished for its architecture and its extraordinary original interiors, it is among the most important historic homes of the nineteenth century anywhere in the nation. As an organization, our mission is to conserve, maintain, and restore this one-of-a-kind property and share its history with the public.
