5th Maine Regiment Museum

About Us

The mission of the Fifth Maine Museum is multifold. We preserve and promote the historic Memorial Hall, share the legacy of the Fifth Maine Regiment during and after the Civil War, help visitors explore Peaks Island history, and serve as a community center for the people of Peaks Island.

The Fifth Maine Regiment Memorial building was built in 1888 by the veterans of the Fifth Maine Regiment as a reunion hall. The iconic stained-glass windows that honor the soldiers were also a fundraising scheme to defray the cost of construction. The veterans created a peaceful space where they and their families gathered, reminisced, and drew comfort from each other.

The Museum is open from May through October, operating as a US Civil War and island history museum with new exhibits opening annually, and a center of activities serving residents and visitors to Peaks Island. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and designated a Greater Portland Landmark in 1984. Over 5,000 people visit the Museum and participate in our diverse programs and events annually.
